As an international student or recent graduate, finding your first job can be daunting. The job market can seem unforgiving, and the process can be disheartening. However, I recently conducted an experiment that might give you some hope and practical insights into navigating the job market more effectively.
Meet Tushar Bansal
For this experiment, I created a fictional profile named Tushar Bansal. Tushar is a recent graduate from Kings University with a degree in International Business Management. In reality, I (Karan) have never been to university and don’t hold any degrees. This experiment aimed to test the waters and see how Tushar’s profile would fare in the current job market.
Tushar’s CV and Experience
Tushar’s CV included two key experiences:
Marketing Assistant at Kings College – A role that showcases his ability to handle marketing tasks effectively.
Junior Business Development Representative at Uniphone – Experience at an Indian startup that highlights his skills in business development.
The Job Application Journey
Tushar applied to a total of 70 jobs related to business development and sales, using the same CV. He also reached out to 10 professionals directly via email. The results were surprising and encouraging.
Interview Invitations
Tushar received 4 interview invitations out of the 70 applications. Here’s a breakdown of the interviews:
Graduate Sales Executive at IQPC – This interview was arranged by a recruitment company.
2. Business Development Executive at Zero Procure – Directly from the company, showcasing a direct hire process.
3. Business Development Executive at Bluetown – Another recruitment company facilitated this interview.
4. Sales/Business Development Executive from a recruitment agency called Jumpstart
Additionally, Tushar didn’t received any response from his direct email outreach, Here is the template I used for all my email outreach.
